Poisoned workers remain in hospital
MORE than 20 workers at manufacturer Wintek, a supplier of iPhone screens, are still in hospital in Jiangsu Province after 62 were poisoned by a chemical used to clean screens.
They were poisoned by n-hexane, a chemical that inhaled even in small doses can lead to dizziness, headaches, and nausea. The workers at Wintek have to use it every day and long-term exposure could lead to nervous damage.
About 10 workers have been discharged after more than 9 months in hospital, and some can still not stand up or walk, National Business Daily reported today.
The report said the factory used n-hexane instead of alcohol as the cleaning agent because it dried faster and allowed workers to clean screens in a shorter time.
The workers have hired a lawyer and were planning to sue Wintek after they disagreed on compensation. They told the newspaper that more workers were poisoned but the factory refused to send them to hospital.
A 20-year old female worker said she fainted once while polishing the touch screens, and woke up in a hospital. But the factory bosses only reimbursed her for clinic fees and refused to pay for hospital bills, the report said.
Wintek said the there were no more new poisoning cases in its Jiangsu factory after the incidents came to light this month.
