'Poisoning' duo jailed

A STREET cleaner and her friend yesterday were sentenced to seven and five years in jail, respectively, for spiking her lover's Sprite beverage with mercury, intending to kill him.

Liu Xiaojing, 29, who worked at the Xuanwu environment and sanitation bureau, remained expressionless when she and her friend Gao Xingyuan were handed down the sentence by a court in Beijing yesterday, Legal Evening News reported.

Prosecutors said Liu started dating 22-year-old co-worker Ma Sai in early 2009. But Ma soon became estranged from her due to his family's objections, which led Liu to suspect that he was cheating on her. She conspired with Gao to spike Ma's drinks with the lethal liquid on three occasions in late 2009.

She almost succeeded once, as Ma was poisoned and hospitalized after drinking a can of Sprite during dinner with Liu in a restaurant.

After recovery, Ma came to know the mercury was added by Liu. But he kept falsely insisting that the Sprite drinks by Coca-Cola China contained mercury, which set off waves of fear and doubts about the company's product quality among customers and media.
