Police: Aunt gouged boy’s eyes

Police confirmed yesterday that the suspect in the case of a six-year-old boy whose eyes were gouged out in the northern Shanxi Province was the boy’s aunt, who committed suicide six days after the incident.

On August 24, Guo Bin was lured by a woman with yellow-dyed hair into a field, where she gouged out his eyes.

On August 30, Guo’s aunt Zhang Huiying, the wife of Guo’s father’s elder brother, killed herself by jumping into a well in Qiaojiazhuang Village in Fenxi County.

The boy’s blood was found on Zhang’s clothes after DNA tests, according to a statement from the police in the city of Linfen.

Police had identified Zhang as the suspect based on investigations and DNA test results.

Meanwhile, an eye expert in Shenzhen said the boy may regain some of his sight.

An ophthalmologist, only identified as Fairooz, a native of India, told Shenzhen Business News that a new procedure may help Guo see silhouettes.

Guo will need surgery to receive two prosthetic eyes made from coral. If they successfully link with the boy’s nerves and blood vessels, he may be able see silhouettes, the doctor said.

Fairooz works at Shenzhen C-MER Dennis Lam Eye Hospital, which is run by Dennis Lam, a famous eye doctor in Hong Kong. Lam said the operation would be free of charge, according to China News Service.

Guo’s family has agreed to take him to Shenzhen for the surgery after he recovers from the attack. Guo Zhiping, Guo’s father, said they had received about 100,000 yuan (US$16,363) in donations from people around the country.
