Police Bust Lean Meat Drug Producer

POLICE in southwest China's Sichuan Province have busted a company that allegedly produced and sold the large quantities of a banned food additive used to promote lean pig meat.

Likai Co in Chengdu, the provincial capital, allegedly made 12,399 kilograms of clenbuterol - also known as lean meat powder - from 2002 to 2009. It sold the drug from 900 yuan (US$139.21) to 1,600 yuan per kilogram, and a total of 15.8 million yuan was earned by the company, Sichuan Daily reported yesterday.

The general manager, surnamed Ning, admitted producing the drug without a license. So far, six suspects have been arrested. The drug was sold to companies in Shanghai, Guangzhou in Guangdong Province and Changzhou in Jiangsu Province, police said.

Clenbuterol was banned in animal feed in 2002.
