Police alert over fake baby milk powder

POLICE are warning parents that 200 cans of fake Hong Kong-made baby milk powder may be on sale in Chinese mainland cities after the scandal was first revealed in Shenzhen in Guangdong Province.

A total of 700 cans of fake Meadjohnson-branded baby milk powder, actually adult milk powder, had been sold to the mainland, mainly to businesses in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, the provincial capital, police said.

During their investigation, police in Shenzhen had retrieved just over 500 cans of the fake product, the China News Service reported yesterday.

The person who uncovered the scandal was the woman who had introduced buyers to the Hong Kong supplier. A Ling told the China News Service that the fake powder, after being resold several times, would have reached inland cities, especially in the northeast provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning.

The report didn't say what aroused her suspicions that the powder was fake.

A Ling said she had introduced several clients to the supplier to buy cheap Hong Kong-made milk powder, and no quality problem had been reported before. So she guessed that the supplier had used real products to win their trust at first, and then sold the fake product to them. The supplier has disappeared with the money, the report said.

The milk powder that police confiscated is undergoing further tests, the news agency said. But if adult milk powder was fed to babies, it would be harmful to their health.

In Shenzhen and Guangzhou, stores selling Hong Kong-made products are popular with mainland residents.

Some stores had already stopped selling Meadjohnson baby milk powder in the wake of the scandal, and some young mothers have begun to travel to Hong Kong themselves to buy the genuine product.

In Shanghai, the Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce said no fake product had been found on the local market so far.
