Police arrest 9 mainlanders over kidnap of HK heiress
POLICE have arrested eight suspects who allegedly fled with millions in ransom money after kidnapping a Hong Kong heiress, bringing the total number of people detained over the incident to nine.
Queenie Rosita Law, the 29-year-old granddaughter of Law Ting-pong, late founder of the Bossini clothing empire, was kidnapped from her home in Hong Kong on April 25.
She was held for at least three days before her family paid HK$28 million (US$3.6 million) for her release.
The Guangdong Provincial Public Security Bureau said yesterday that seven suspects were this month arrested in Guangdong, which is next to Hong Kong, and another in the southwestern province of Guizhou.
Hong Kong police said earlier that another suspect was arrested at a border checkpoint in Hong Kong as he attempted to flee to the mainland.
Officers seized more than HK$2.8 million (US$361,000) in cash and property, including watches and jewelry, said Guangdong police.
“We must not let cross-border criminals turn the mainland into a haven and we will not be soft on those who dare to commit an offence under this policy,” the police bureau said in a statement.
All the suspects are mainland residents, with half from Guizhou, the bureau said.
On May 3, police arrested a suspect surnamed Zheng in Hong Kong. Two days later another five suspects were arrested, the police bureau said.
Then on May 7, police held a man surnamed You in connection with planning the kidnapping and two men surnamed Jiang and Liang in connection with organizing the illegal transfer of people and disposing of cash and stolen goods, said the bureau.
The gang had been planning a kidnapping in Hong Kong since early April, said Guo Shaobo, vice head of the police bureau.
In the early hours of April 25, they broke into Law’s home in Kowloon Peak and kidnapped her after stealing watches and jewelry, said Guo. They released Law after receiving the ransom from her family. Law was left on a hillside after the ransom was paid.
After her release, hundreds of armed officers combed Hong Kong rural areas to hunt for the kidnappers, who fled the scene in a white Honda.
Investigations are continuing, said officials.
