Police arrest Saudi man for molesting woman

A 22-YEAR-OLD Saudi Arabian man has been arrested by police in Changsha, capital of Hunan Province, for allegedly molesting a Chinese woman with violence on a sidewalk last Thursday morning.

Changsha police yesterday said the man, identified by the surname Alsubaie, has confessed.

According to a statement posted on the Changsha police's Weibo, the man said he had drunk alcohol early Thursday morning and when he saw a woman inside a restaurant around 6am, he molested her inside and outside the establishment.

Alsubaie is a student who was studying Chinese in a short-term language program at a Changsha university, the local Xiaoxiang Morning Herald reported yesterday.

Police took statements from numerous witnesses who said the man forced the 38-year-old local woman to the ground and removed both his pants and hers on the sidewalk of Jiefang Road W., right in front of a KFC restaurant.

Police said several passers-by caught the man and alerted police, who detained him at the scene.

A witness, surnamed Yang, said they thought the two were lovers at first as they appeared to be "hugging and pushing" each other, but then the incident turned violent.

"Several others joined me to stop him," Yang said. "When we approached, he stood up, grabbing his pants to cover his lower body. We were so angry that a young girl scolded him in English."

Several furious witnesses started beating him. He uttered words in English as he tried to dodge the blows, Yang said.

In May, a 24-year-old British tourist was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Beijing and was arrested by police. Video footage showing the incident prompted a fury among the public.
