Police arrest pork seller
A PORK seller in Guangdong Province was arrested for soaking pork in borax and bean flour, Guangzhou Daily reported.
According to the procuratorate of Nanhai District, Foshan City, the 41-year-old suspect surnamed Tan allegedly had sold about 16 tons of soaked pork since January 2010. After being soaked in the stain, the pork looked like beef and weighed more. Tan earned about 234,000 yuan (US$35,903) from such sales.
Borax is toxic to humans and ingesting a large amount of it can be fatal.
Police officers said that Tan bought about 275 kilograms of pork on July 26 and soaked it in the stain at his workshop. The stain was discovered to compose of pig blood, borax, bean flour, sugar, salt and water. After soaking, the pork's total weight increased to 350 kilograms.
Tan allegedly confessed he bought the pork for 12 yuan per kilogram and earned a profit from the added weight. He said he believed his buyer would sell the pork as beef, which costs more than 20 yuan per kilogram.
After detecting Tan's fake beef on July 26, the local administration responded quickly and seized the remainder of his pork.
Tan escaped but was captured on March 14.
