Police assistant held after woman raped in home

A POLICE assistant has been detained in Guangdong Province after a woman was raped and beaten in her home, while her husband hid in a closet.

Yang Xili, an official with the community's public security team, has a history of beating residents - often from poor backgrounds - when drunk, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

The incident occurred in an apartment in the city of Shenzhen, at about 8pm on October 23.

The 31-year-old husband hid in a closet a few meters from the room where his 29-year-old wife was allegedly being beaten and raped by the police assistant.

The husband told the newspaper he didn't try to raise the alarm "due to fear."

It is alleged Yang arrived drunk at the couple's apartment, accompanied by two heavies.

"I'm going to beat you to death," Yang is said to have shouted at the couple and then started smashing up their furniture.

The husband fled to the closet while his wife tried to stop the destruction, but was caught by Yang and beaten with his police baton, the newspaper said.

With his henchmen guarding the door, Yang allegedly subjected the woman to a terrifying ordeal that lasted more than an hour, during which she was raped and beaten.

Her husand said he had wanted to intervene. "How I wish I could have rushed out, grabbed a knife and stabbed him to death," he told the newspaper.

"But I couldn't. I can't go to jail and leave my children to fend for themselves."

He said he also took no action because he feared that, even with a knife, he was no match for the much taller Yang and his two accomplices.

When Yang finally left, the husband pursued him and then began fighting him. This attracted the attention of other members of the public security team who detained Yang.

The husband reported the rape an hour afterward.

Police said Yang will face a rape charge and they are still investigating the case.

Officers told the newspaper that the husband should have reported the attack at the time so police could have intervened.

The public security team told the newspaper that Yang has been fired. Officials said he was well-known for his violent temper and enjoyed beating people. "The more the victims screamed, the harder he would beat them," said a former colleague.

But the team didn't say how he managed to be employed as a police assistant.
