Police break up US$1.5m telecom fraud operation

Fifty-three suspects have been arrested in connection with telecom fraud involving more than 10 million yuan (US$1.5 million), police in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province said yesterday.
The ring was busted last week in a joint raid launched by police from Shaanxi and Sichuan provinces. They also seized more than 200 pieces of equipment, including computers, 200 mobile phones, and more than 1,000 fake prepaid phone cards.
An investigation showed that the suspects began hiring telephone operators in Chengdu, Sichuan, and Pucheng County, Shaanxi, in November 2014. With the help of phone number-changing software, they pretended to be staff of a Chengdu-based mobile phone service center, and sold fake and poor quality mobile phones to people in both provinces. More than 20,000 people fell victim to the scam.
The investigation continues.
Telecom-based fraud is a growing crime in China.
Police have cracked 16,708 cases, apprehended 5,825 suspects and busted 927 gangs since a campaign targeting new types of the crime was launched on October 30.
