Police bust ‘Freedom Fighters’
An 18-strong gang whose members targeted expats has been busted in Guangzhou, capital of south China’s Guangdong Province, police said yesterday.
Its members — 16 foreigners and two Chinese — are accused of five robberies and two drug trafficking cases. They are also suspects in blackmail and kidnapping cases.
Police said the gang, which styled itself the “Freedom Fighters,” came to their attention last year when officers were investigating a robbery involving an expat.
After an investigation that lasted several months, police raided premises in Guangzhou, Foshan and Dongguan on February 6, seizing 11 foreigners and two Chinese.
Large amounts of cocaine were found along with “Freedom Fighters” uniforms and badges.
More members were caught on April 16 and a quantity of cannabis seized.
Among the gang members held were a priest and an accountant, police said.
