Police bust abduction ring, free 17 Vietnamese women
A human-trafficking ring led by a Vietnamese citizen has been busted by Chinese police in a nationwide crackdown. Police seized 50 suspects and rescued 17 Vietnamese women and a Chinese woman in northwest Gansu Province.
A Gansu newspaper, Lanzhou Morning Post, reported today that the abducted women are between 17 and 30 years old. They were either lured by high pays or directly kidnapped in Vietnam and smuggled across border into Yunnan Province.
The ring members asked Chinese villagers to falsely adopt them as daughters, helped them complete household registry via illegal channels, and then sold the women to bachelors in poverty-stricken areas in Gansu Province.
Their crime came to light when a villager in Wenxian County reported to police that he spent more than 90,000 yuan (US$14,450) to buy a wife last February, but the woman left home one month later. He felt cheated by the middleman.
Through investigation, police found several rural families in Gansu had Vietnamese wives who claimed they were abducted to China, the newspaper said.
After several months, police caught 50 suspects in Yunnan, Gansu and Beijing and rescued 18 women. The identity of some women has been confirmed, the paper said.
