Police bust group selling fake medicines worth more than 100m yuan

Police have caught 56 suspects and seized nearly 50,000 fake medicines worth more than 100 million yuan (US$16.23 million) in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province.

Police said fake botulin toxin and hyaluronic acid shots were among the items seized. Botulin toxin injections are used to remove facial wrinkles while hyaluronic acid shots are injected into joints to treat osteoarthritis.

The crackdown was triggered by a routine check of a beauty parlor on March 11, when police and food and drug inspectors found more than 500 unlicensed products, Zhejiang Daily reported today.

After checking the beauty parlor’s sales records, express delivery papers and bank accounts, Ningpo police suspected it was involved in an illegal industry chain.

Later that month, the beauty parlor’s operator surnamed Wang, a 27-year-old woman from Shandong Province, surrendered to police and gave information leading to the raid, the paper reported.

Police said they are still investigating the case.
