Police bust mafia gang, nabbing 58 suspects

A total of 58 suspects have been detained in a police crackdown on organized crimes in Conghua City, south China's Guangdong Province.

The criminal gang had more than 60 members, all of them ex-convicts, and engaged in underground casino operation, drug trafficking, extortion and assault, Guangzhou Daily reported today.

Nearly 740 police officers took part in the crackdown operation on June 7, arrested three gang leaders, raided their four offices and seized two guns.

The mafia-style group was based in Conghua for over five years, police said. In order to win building projects, they allegedly to occupy a construction site, beat others and smashed their construction equipment.

The gang also sold drugs to local night clubs and acted as loan shark, charging exorbitant interest rates.
