Police bust violent gang in Guangzhou
POLICE have busted what they say is Guangzhou's most violent gang, which used submachine guns to control the south China city's underworld for more than a decade.
Guangzhou police unsealed the files on the mafia-like gangs started by brothers Wu Zhijian and Wu Zhiwei, Guangzhou Daily reported today. They were allegedly involved in at least four murders and 17 other crimes.
The police said they seized 19 members of the Wu brothers' gang. A thorough search found two submachine guns, four pistols, and four shotguns, along with 390 bullets, nine grenades, 384 detonators and 18 kilograms of dynamite in the gang's possession.
Prosecutors have charged them with running mafia-like gangs and handed the case to Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court. No more details were revealed in the indictment.
They were caught because the Wu brothers got into a fight with two undercover police officers after a fight, the newspaper said. Police netted the other gang members following their confessions.
The report said the gang thrived in drug dealing. Wu Zhijian allegedly had two crystal meth drug factories in Guangzhou, making him millions of yuan.
When the Wu brothers decided to get rid of someone in their gang, they forced him to swallow a lethal dose of crystal, the report said. They allegedly did this at least once in October 2008 to Chen Weibing who was suspected of stealing drugs from the brothers. Another member was tortured to death.
Police said the gang was the cruelest and best organized in Guangzhou.
After a 2007 crackdown on drug dealers, the Wu brothers found it hard to make money and became addicted to drugs, the report said.
