Police cancel arrest warrant on journalist

POLICE in an east China county have dropped their detention warrant for a business journalist over his reports that were deemed to have ruined a Zhejiang Province company's reputation.

The province's Lishui City police ordered Suichang County police to cancel their warrant on Qiu Ziming, reporter with The Economic Observer newspaper, and apologize to the journalist, zjol.com.cn reported today.

The scrapping came one day after Huang Jinghong, a senior official with Suichang police, said the warrant was issued in accordance with proper legal procedure.

Lishui police launched an investigation into the issue after an online post disclosing the warrant sparked public outcry about media independence.

Qiu published four reports about backdoor trading in Suichang-based Zhejiang Kan Specialties Material Co Ltd, which is listed on the Shenzhen market.

A survey ran by Sina.com indicated 87.2 percent, or 39,139, out of the 44,895 respondents felt the detention warrant was illegal. Nearly all, or 98.0 percent, believed the reports were truthful.
