Police capture tunneling jewel thieves
POLICE in Fujian Province said yesterday they have captured two suspected robbers who allegedly dug a 32-meter-long tunnel to a jewelry shop and stole more than 200,000 yuan worth of jewelry.
The two allegedly confessed they had been working on the 2-meter-deep tunnel for more than a month since June. They also crawled through 25 meters of sewer.
Police of Jianyang City said one of the two suspects was an honored teacher for three consecutive years in a local high school, Qilu Evening News reported today.
The teacher surnamed Yu also confessed that he and his accomplice committed another tunnel robbery in the province's Wuyishan City.
Police said they have recovered most of the stolen gold jewelry, although 20,000 yuan worth of jewelry has been sold or dispersed.
