Police catch ‘anti-drugs’ actor taking crystal meth
An actor who previously used his fame to push an anti-drugs message has been detained by police in Beijing after he was caught taking crystal meth at his home in the capital.
Police said they had received a tip-off from one of Wang Xuebing’s friends and had been monitoring his movements.
According to the Beijing Evening News, the 43-year-old turned to drugs several years ago when he had to lose weight for a screen role.
News portal www.163.com quoted sources saying that Wang had been using drugs for over 15 years and this had led to his divorce from TV actress Sun Ning.
Wang, Beijing’s anti-drug ambassador in 2005 and 2006, said previously: “We should stay away from drugs ... As an actor, I receive more public attention and I would like to take advantage of my status to contribute to the anti-drug affairs.”
Police also announced the detention of fellow actor Zhang Bo, 38.
Acting on a tip-off, they found drugs at his home in the city and he had tested positive for crystal meth.
He had admitted using drugs, police said.
Wang and Zhang had appeared together in a couple of popular TV series.
Wang also starred in “Black Coal, Thin Ice,” winner of the Golden Bear at last year’s Berlin International Film Festival.
A string of celebrities, including movie and TV stars and film directors, have been charged with drug-related offenses recently.
Among them was singer Yin Xiangjie who was sentenced to seven months in jail on February 28 for drugs possession at his home in Beijing. He was also once an anti-drug ambassador.
In January, Jaycee Chan, son of Chinese kung fu star Jackie Chan, also an anti-drug ambassador, was jailed for six months on drugs charges.
