Police charged after driver drowns
FOUR traffic police officers in a northwest county will go on trial after a driver they chased jumped into a river and drowned, today's Sanqin Daily reported.
Prosecutors in Shaanxi Province's Yulin City have charged the officers with abuse of power.
On July 3, 2008, some traffic police in Fugu County saw a farm vehicle driving without a number plate and carrying people illegally.
The driver, He Liqi, who was afraid of being caught and fined by the traffic police, jumped off the vehicle and tried to escape.
Chased by four officers, He jumped into the Yellow River. The officers did not attempt to rescue him themselves or call for assistance.
He's body was pulled from the river two days later after the Fugu county government had organized a search.
On July 6, He's angry family stopped a police van carrying He's body to a local funeral house for the autopsy. The family tried to reclaim the body, earlier reports said.
That dispute attracted a large angry crowd who blocked traffic and caused mayhem, overturning three cars including two police cars.
Seven of the ringleaders were caught by the police and six police officers were suspended from work after the government launched an investigation.
