POLICE are hunting for the owner of a stone quarry in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region who reportedly enslaved and tortured 11 mentally-retarded and homeless men he obtained from a welfare center.
Xinjiang police said a team had gong to Sichuan Province after they received tip-offs that the suspect, Li Xinglin, and some of his workers had boarded a train for Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, on Sunday, Xinjiang Metropolis reported today.
The stone quarry has been closed down and police are questioning Li's wife, who helped Li run the quarry in Tuoksun County.
Investigation showed the quarry was registered in 2006 and hired workers through a so-called welfare center for the homeless and disable in Sichuan Province, but Sichuan authorities said that center had never been licensed by the government.
