Police chief appeals death sentence

THE former police chief in Chongqing Municipality faced an appeal hearing today over his death sentence for bribery and conniving with the city's notorious crime rings.

Wen Qiang, former head of Chongqing Public Security Bureau, was sentenced to death last month for taking 12 million yuan (US$1.75 million) in bribes and protecting gangs, reported news Website CQNews.com today.

He appealed for a lenient sentence, saying: "Death is too much for my crime."

Wen's wife Zhou Xiaoya and three former senior Chongqing policemen, Huang Daiqiang, Zhao Liming and Chen Tao, were also brought to court as defendants. Zhou was jailed for eight years in her first trial.

Huang, former deputy chief of criminal police in Chongqing, was jailed for 20 years, had 300,000 yuan confiscated and was fined 2.2 million yuan.

Chen, former deputy chief of the public order department, was jailed for 19 1/2 years and had 100,000 yuan confiscated.

Zhao, former deputy traffic police chief, was imprisoned for 17 1/2 years and fined 100,000 yuan. They all filed appeals.

Dozens of Chongqing residents thronged the court today trying to get into the hearing. Some of them kneeled at the gate, holding posters telling how their lives were blighted when Wen controlled the city's underworld.

During Wen's 14-year tenure, 1,447 murders went unsolved, China Youth Daily reported yesterday. His own sister-in-law Xie Caiping was known as the "godmother" in Chongqing's underworld and was sentenced to 18 years in prison for opening casinos and bribery.

The court did not announce a decision today.
