Police chief handling the detention of teen for spreading rumors suspended in graft probe
The police chief of Zhangjiachuan County in northwest Gansu Province was suspended yesterday over bribery claims, according to a statement on the local government website.
Bai Yongqiang, director and Party secretary of the county’s police bureau, reportedly gave 50,000 yuan to his predecessor Shi Juping between 1995 and 2005 in the name of New Year gifts. Shi was sentenced to 12 years in prison for bribery crime early this year.
Bai’s corruption came to light recently when police were handling the case of a 16-year-old student who was wrongly detained for spreading “rumors.” The boy was released yesterday from a seven-day administrative detention.
