Police chiefs fired over torture death

TWO police chiefs in central China lost their jobs and four officers are being investigated for torturing a detainee to death and covering it up by saying he died after drinking a cup of hot water.

Zhang Guanjun, the head of Lushan County Public Security Bureau in Henan Province, was forced to resign for neglecting his duties after Wang Yanhui, a 28-year-old local villager held on theft charges, died while being questioned, Xinhua reported yesterday.

Xinhua said an investigation was launched and four policemen involved in Wang's questioning were handed over to prosecutors after local media quoted Wang's relatives as saying bruises were found on his body.

The bureau's deputy head was sacked. Henan Province Public Security Bureau said they found four police officers in charge of Wang's interrogation had used violence in order to get a confession.

Wang died three days after being taken into custody. His relatives found his nipples had been ripped off, his penis had been injured and his skull fractured.

But Lushan police told them Wang was perfectly healthy during the interrogation but collapsed only after drinking a cup of hot water with some liquid cold medicine.

Wang's case is the first suspicious death in China's detention houses this year.

China's Ministry of Public Security has issued a guideline on the management and education in detention centers to protect detainees' rights.
