Police cleared over debt collector killing

THREE police officers have been cleared of allegations of dereliction of duty after they failed to stop a young man killing a debt collector who had humiliated his mother, the Shandong Province People’s Procuratorate said today.

And investigation had shown they did not take action during the incident on April 14, 2016.

Twenty-three-year-old Yu Huan was sentenced to life imprisonment in February for stabbing four of his mother's creditors with a knife after they exposed themselves to her while demanding she repay her debt. One later died in hospital.

Some earlier reports said the police arrived at the scene, did nothing and left.

The procuratorate said 26-year-old female police officer Zhu Xiuming and two auxiliary police officers reached the scene after they received a call and warned the 10-plus debt collectors to stop.

But because the debt collectors outnumbered them, Zhu and her colleagues called for support and left the scene to wait for back-up. After Yu’s attack, they seized his knife and collected evidence.

Prosecutors said although the three officers had failed to control the scene and separate the two sides, it didn’t reach the standard for convicting them of dereliction of duty.

The Shandong High People's Court said that the second trial of Yu’s case is scheduled to begin tomorrow.
