BEIJING police have seized 37 people from three online football gambling rings that allegedly attracted 200 million yuan (US$29.26 million) in bets over the past year.
The first ring was cracked on January 25, with 12 members caught, including an agent of an overseas online gambling agency, four secondary agents and seven gamblers. Police also seized 15 computers and more than 20 bank cards, today's Beijing Daily reported.
The second bust was on February 2 when 10 people were caught, including 8 second-level agents and two gamblers.
The third ring was nabbed two days later with 15 members.
The three rings had attracted bets of nearly 200 million yuan last year, according to Li Zhongyi, vice captain of Beijing police security management squad.
The bets were mainly on European football matchers, and sports such as tennis, badminton and basketball, he said.
