Police defend detention

POLICE in central China's Hubei Province defended their 14-year detention of a man in a mental hospital as "legal and justified," saying the man had been suffering from paranoia following the breakdown of his marriage.

A spokesperson surnamed Yu with Zhuxi County said they wouldn't consider a compensation request from the family of Guo Yuanrong, 49 - a former county official, who was admitted for treatment on his alleged -mental disease in 1996, the Yunnan Information Times reported yesterday.

Yu said they sent Guo to a mental hospital for compulsory treatment after he was reported acting strangely. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia by a district hospital.

Guo said he had no opinion on the situation, but his sister said she planned to sue the government for compensation. She said she was enraged by a statement which she said appeared on the county's website on Wednesday. It said Guo is plagued by incurable mental problems following his divorce and that Guo's family has a history of mental problems.

The posting has since been removed from the county's website.
