Police detain 3 suspects over syringe attacks

THREE suspects have been detained over two syringe attacks on a woman in Fujian Province, police said yesterday.

A man known as Zhou, his wife Zhang and his brother-in-law allegedly tried to blackmail a businessman they knew in Fujian's Pingtan County by stabbing his wife surnamed Chen with a syringe.

They allegedly wanted to extort money from the businessman to pay for the trip back to their homes in Sichuan and Henan provinces.

They allegedly stabbed Chen with a syringe in the waist on June 25 but didn't receive a response the next day. Police said they assaulted Chen again on June 30, this time stabbing her in the belly. They fled after the attack. Zhou's brother-in-law then called the businessman and tried to extort money from him.

Zhou allegedly loaded the syringe with a mixed liquid made of herbs and injected it into Chen's body. Zhou then planned to offer her a unique treatment to cure the bruise around the needle hole.

After the victim called police, rumors spread panic about syringe attacks in the area and the case gained the attention of Fujian's public security department.

Investigators zeroed in on Zhou and his alleged co-conspirators on July 3.

Zhou and his wife were seized on September 30 in Sichuan's Yuechi County. Zhou's brother-in-law was caught the next day in Fengqiu County of Henan Province.

In an unrelated case, police in Chongqing on Monday denied a syringe attack led to the death of a drug addict.
