Police detain couple after baby drowned in river when they quarrel

Police in Henan Province have detained a couple whose baby son fell into river and drowned when they quarrel and fight on a bridge yesterday.

The 34-year-old father said the boy accidentally fell from the bridge during the fight while the 24-year-old mother alleged her husband threw the baby into river on purpose, according to today's Beijing Times report, quoting local police.

Police are looking for witnesses and the case is still under investigation.

According to the report, the baby boy's mother surnamed Shi called police about 7am yesterday and when officers arrived, they only found Shi on the scene and looked "frightened."

Shi told police the baby is under bridge and her husband had drove home.

Officers and firemen immediately rushed to rescue the baby out of water, but paramedics pronounced the boy dead at scene.

Preliminary investigation shows the couple, both from Yima City in Henan, work in Ruyang County and started to have a brawl the night before yesterday. The wife attempted to go back hometown with the baby boy yesterday morning.

The husband went after them to the bridge and tried to stop his wife, which triggered a fierce fight later. During the conflict, the baby fell into the river, the investigation shows.
