Police detain father over hanging toddler

POLICE have detained the father who hanged his two-year-old daughter from the eighth story of their home on Tuesday morning in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Police did not elaborate on the charges the father was facing, Chengdu Business Daily reported yesterday.

Urine tests confirmed the father, Hu Binjun, 34, was hallucinating at the time after taking crystal methamphetamine the night before.

He regretted his actions when he returned to normal, police said.

The girl who was saved by a firefighter suffered little injury despite signs of bruising on her arms and legs, according to Zhang Quanguang, a doctor with Chengdu No.6 Hospital, where she was treated after the drama.

"The girl is quite well," the doctor said. The incident would not have a psychological effect on her, he noted. "She is only two, too young to remember the scare."

The girl was excited in the hospital and danced until 4 yesterday morning, her family told the newspaper.

Local residents visited her at the hospital and sent gifts of toys, candies and dolls.

Her mother Wang Xingxing helped her check out of the hospital yesterday noon.

The mother told the newspaper she may divorce Hu.

Though Hu had been nice to her in the past few years, he had changed after he became addicted to drugs, she said.

Hu began beating her after finding a picture on her mobile phone which he thought was proof she was having an affair, Wang said.

Tuesday was the 48th birthday of Qi Yong, the firefighter who distracted Hu during the rescue. His colleague, Chen Long, slid down a rope to save the girl.

Qi had to call his friends to cancel his birthday banquet because of the emergency.
