Police detain mother after baby killed in balcony fall

POLICE have detained a mother for allegedly causing her 79-day-old baby's death when he fell from the 6th floor balcony.

The tragedy happened in the morning of July 18 in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.

The mother, surnamed Huang, told police she was cooking in the kitchen and left her baby on the balcony alone that morning, Southern Metropolis newspaper reported today.

After hearing a strange sound, she went to the balcony and found the baby had fallen. He later died in the hospital.

Huang allegedly told police she always put the baby on the balcony for better sunshine and fresh air, the report said.

A member of Shenzhen Lawyers Association pointed out the mother would not be liable for punishment if the incident was proven to be an accident.
