Beijing police detain scriptwriter after tip-offs about drugs
SCRIPTWRITER, novelist and TV host Ning Caishen has been detained by police on drugs charges, authorities in Beijing said yesterday.
Ning, 39, a Shanghainese whose real name is Chen Wanning, rose to fame with “My Own Swordsman,” a popular TV sitcom, and recently hosted TV dating program “If You Are The One.”
The program issued a notice yesterday, saying its one-year contract with Ning ended in May and a new guest host had been signed. It said it was shocked to hear of the drug-taking allegations.
The Beijing Public Security Bureau said police, acting on tip-offs, found crystal meth, in Ning’s apartment in Chaoyang District on Tuesday along with drug-taking equipment. A urine test confirmed that Ning had taken the drug, it said.
He is said to have told police he started to take it in December last year and had just taken some before the police arrived. He expressed his regret for taking drugs and apologized, police said.
Ning said he had paid 3,000 yuan (US$482) for the drug in total since last December and has almost used all of it.
He told police he took drugs to cope with the pressure of being a writer.
Ning’s team denied newspaper reports that his arrest was connected with the apprehension of film director Zhang Yuan on June 13.
Beijing-based The Legal Mirror said Zhang was caught during a regular police check at Beijing South Railway Station when he tried to run away after showing his identity card. Zhang later tested positive for drugs.
The director of 1997’s “East Palace, West Palace” had been detained by police in 2008 for taking drugs with friends at his home.
Late last month, Li Daimo, a singer made famous on a TV talent show, was sentenced to nine months in prison for allowing others to take drugs in his Beijing apartment.
Yesterday was International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking,
