Police detain study firm president

THE former president of a multinational private training study company has been detained by police in south China for allegedly raping an intern.

Sunmoon Lifelong Education Group issued a statement on its official Website saying that the board of directors had decided to accept the resignation of Song Shanmu and assign Li Muzi, former vice president, to replace him after an urgent meeting, China News Service reported yesterday.

The 46-year-old is now at a police station in Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province.

He was summoned back from his studies in Beijing after a 22-year-old woman called the police accusing him of rape on May 3.

She claimed Song had lured her to his apartment, threatened to kill her, forced her to pose for naked photos and then raped her.

Song's lawyer Yang Lin said the incident could have been a trap set by other competitors.

The Shanghai branch of the Sunmoon Lifelong Education Group said that no trainees had asked to quit classes so far because of the allegations but would get a refund of fees if they chose to do so.
