Police examine trade in placentas
POLICE in central China's Henan Province are investigating a hospital alleged to have illegally sold human placentas to vendors who resold them to restaurants and drug stores.
Police caught two men when they were loading two bags of placentas onto a van at the gate of Tongxu People's Hospital in Kaifeng County on August 23, Henan Daily reported yesterday.
The suspects, both surnamed Liu, said they ran the trade for years to meet a booming demand: Many Chinese say eating the nutrient-rich placenta can cure maternity diseases and slow the aging process.
The vendors said they usually bought the fresh placentas from several hospitals in Kaifeng and Zhoukou counties at 30 yuan (US$4.40) each and then sold them at a higher price
The Tongxu hospital authorities, however, denied selling any placentas to individuals for profit.
The human placenta, though full of nutrients and proteins, can also be hotbed of bacteria.
