Police find fake-plate hit-run driver

POLICE in western China yesterday caught a man who allegedly drove a car bearing a fake government car plate and hit a traffic policewoman last week.

On April 24 the policewoman Zhang Ang signaled for the driver of a black Benz sport-utility vehicle to stop, but suddenly the car sped up and hit Zhang and dragged her nearly 20 meters along Xihua Road in Xi'an city, Shannxi Province.

The car ran over Zhang's right arm and drove off, reported today's Chinese Business View.

The accident caused public uproar as Zhang said it was a government car bearing a number plate with an "O".

A post on Sina.com said drivers of government cars with special plates in Xi'an often enjoy "privileges" such as breaking traffic rules without penalty.

Police later found the car plate was owned by a deputy mayor of Huayin City, Shannxi Province. However, the officer's registered car was a Buick, not a Benz.

Yesterday a company guard told the police he saw the wanted car in a lane near an engineering and electronic company.

Guard Ma Wei said a 40-year-old man took off the original plate and replaced it with a plate bearing "K" which meant the car was for ordinary use.

Police detained the man and impounded the car for investigation.

Doctors said Zhang's arm would recover after extended treatment. Zhang's arm was operated on for three hours after the accident.
