Police find mother of newborn trapped in toilet pipe
A 22-year-old woman yesterday admitted that she is the mother of a newborn boy who was rescued alive from a toilet pipe after police found blood-stained tissues and toys in her room.
The woman, her name not revealed, said she had sex with a man in Pujiang County, Zhejiang Province and didn't realize she was pregnant until early this year. But the man denied it was his baby. Afraid of scolding by her parents, she kept it a secret, police learned.
On Saturday she felt abdominal cramps and went to use the restroom. There, she delivered a baby into a squat toilet and the baby slipped into the sewer. She tried to grab him but the baby disappeared into the pipe, she told the police.
She cleared the blood and told her landlady that she heard a baby's cry. Firefighters were called and spent two hours to saw off an L-shaped pipe directly under the squat toilet. The baby was pulled out alive and is now in stable condition.
Police began to search for the baby's parents among tenants in the building and zeroed in on her on Monday night.
Although the woman admitted that she is the baby's mother, police have yet to found out whether she really made an attempt to save her boy or she intentionally dumped him.
