Police find truck driver in death of heroic Wu

POLICE said they have found the driver of the truck that caused the death of Wu Bin, a bus driver who was hailed as a hero for stopping his bus and saving 24 passengers even after he was mortally wounded, officials said in Wuxi, a city in eastern Jiangsu Province.

Wu, 48, was hit by flying metal from a broken drum brake while driving on a highway near Wuxi on May 29.

The driver of the truck that shed the 3.5-kilogram piece of metal was found in Yichun, Jiangxi Province, and he has been taken to Wuxi for further investigation, police said yesterday.

Police said the red truck, one of the nine trucks that passed the area when the incident occurred, just had a drum brake replaced on June 1.

All of the nine trucks were made by the Dongfeng Motor Corp. Metal fatigue caused the substandard brake to break up, Wuxi police said earlier.

Fan Kaizhou, a Jiangsu lawyer, said the truck driver caused the accident unintentionally and is unlikely to be charged with a crime. But he still should cover Wu's funeral fees and pay compensation to the family, Legal Daily cited law experts as saying.
