Police hold 7 for deadly Beijing fire

POLICE have held seven people, including a policeman and three district officials, responsible for a fire that killed 18 people and injured 24 others in Beijing, officials said on Friday.

Fifteen officials were also punished for the fire, which broke out in a four-story garment workshop that included a workers' dormitory in Daxing District on April 25. It was the deadliest fire in Beijing in nine years.

A probe by work safety authorities found the battery of an electric bicycle short-circuited on the ground floor. Fire quickly rose to the upper floors where workers slept.

The probe found the fire bureau, police bureau and commerce bureau were responsible for loose supervision. The workshop operated without a license, the probe found.
