Police hold syringe-discipline teacher
A KINDERGARTEN teacher in southwestern China has been detained for allegedly stabbing 20 toddlers with a syringe as part of disciplinary measures.
All the victims, aged between three and four, received blood tests on Saturday to detect any HIV infection, Chengdu-based West China Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
It was reported that all the victims were stabbed by the same syringe.
Both the suspect, Sun Qiqi and the kindergarten in Jianshui County of Yunnan Province were unlicensed, local police said.
Sun was in charge of a class of 37 children, 20 of whom were targeted.
Many of them were found by their parents to have needle holes on the body and a boy, three, had eight holes on his hands and waist while another had five holes on the buttocks.
The victim with eight holes told his parents that Sun stabbed him if he didn't take a nap and warned him not to tell his parents.
A parent found a syringe at Sun's desk after class on Friday but it was hidden by Sun, the newspaper said.
Facing parents on Friday, Sun admitted she used the drastic measure.
Sun, in her 20s, started her career as a kindergarten teacher in September. She graduated from a nursing school and was unemployed until recruited by the kindergarten this year, according to a source familiar with her circumstances.
Sun's parents divorced when she was young, said the same source.
Sun's supervisor, Bai Yali, said she performed well in front of her and she had never received complaints from parents before.
Bai began operating the kindergarten in September.
He Xin, Jianshui's education director, confirmed both the kindergarten and Sun were unlicensed, and said the county education bureau was assisting police in investigations.
He also sent 14 task forces to check schools in the county to crack down on physical punishment.
