Police hunt journalist over trade reports

A BUSINESS journalist is wanted by police in east China's Zhejiang Province after his coverage of backdoor trading in a listed firm in Suichang County.

Qiu Ziming with The Economic Observer is wanted by county police in Lishui City for allegedly damaging a firm's business reputation, an officer surnamed Wang with Suichang's Miaogao Police Office told today's Nanfang Metropolis Daily.

The Economic Observer officials defended Qiu's coverage as reliable with sound evidence, and said they are communicating with Lishui police over the issue.

Qiu published three reports about backdoor trading in Suichang-based Zhejiang Kan Specialties Material Co Ltd, which is listed on the Shenzhen market.

Kan's East China region officials had tried to convince the newspaper to retract the reports but were refused, the newspaper's officials said.

A financial professional with a Hangzhou firm who tipped off Qiu is being held by police, the newspaper cited close sources as saying.
