Police hunt killers of 233 swans

POLICE in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are offering a 100,000-yuan (US$14,775) reward for information leading to the arrest of poachers suspected of poisoning 233 swans.
The swans were found dead in a lake in Xilingol League and tests revealed they were poisoned with the pesticide carbofuran, the Zhenglan Banner government information office said, adding that 26 mallards had also been found dead.
Photos of the dead birds, which had been removed from the water by herdsmen, were put online on Sunday.
The lake, about 300 kilometers from Beijing, is a migratory stop for swans.
The local government has begun to safely dispose of the dead birds and has launched a review into the local environment.
Patrols in areas frequented by migratory birds have been stepped up.
