Police hunt protesters
A GROUP of protesters are wanted by Hunan Province's Chenzhou police after they overturned five police vehicles in a protest march against the government regulation banning motorcycles from downtown areas.
The police issued a public announcement on Tuesday that they had identified suspects who disturbed social order and violated local laws in Monday's protest. They ordered those suspects to surrender to the police within three days, Beijing News reported yesterday.
Residents who catch the wanted suspects and turn them in to the police are offered an award of 10,000 yuan while those who contribute to the arrest of the suspects with valuable information will receive 5,000 yuan as reward, said the newspaper.
A total of 13 protesters have been detained by the police for disturbing social order on Monday.
More than 1,000 people, most of whom were motorcyclists, gathered near a Chenzhou City's municipal government office building on Monday, demanding to see the city mayor, Xiang Lili.
The protestors were gathering to ask the government to withdraw a regulation banning motorcycles without downtown licenses and some mopeds, even the popular electronic mopeds, from downtown areas.
Many policemen arrived at the office building and blocked the entrance.
Angry protesters overturned five police cars and another official vehicle.
Officials with the Chenzhou City government held a conferance on Monday evening and decided that they would ratify the regulation, much to commuters dismay.
