Police in ‘Breaking Bad’ arrest

Police in south China have arrested a former college admissions director who they say became a drugs kingpin by cooking and selling methamphetamine.

The case was likened to US TV series “Breaking Bad,” where chemistry teacher Walter White turned to meth production to make money.

More than 3.15 kilograms of crystal meth and 185 kilograms of drug-making chemicals were found in an apartment rented by the suspect, a 35-year-old surnamed Lu, in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, police said yesterday.

The case came to light in March when police found dozens of drug users claiming to have bought meth from Lu through a social networking website.

“From the information, we concluded that a single kingpin may be controlling all the supplies, even making them. Judging from the amount of drugs sold, it was likely that there was a big drugs warehouse or factory,” said Wen Jianzhong, police chief in Guangxi’s Hechi City, where many of the buyers were arrested.

Lu is alleged to have become a drug addict after resigning from his job directing admissions at a technical college in Nanning in 2012.

“In order to fulfill his personal need and make money, Lu bought equipment to cook meth and regularly purchased chemicals online to make the drug,” police said.

They said that when he was seized on September 28, Lu was preparing to install a more advanced set of cookers, and that he confessed to distributing the meth through express delivery and taking payment online.
