Police in error beat woman unconscious
AN official's wife thought six thugs beat her up at the gate to her home, but the attackers turned out to be plainclothes policemen who mistook the 58-year-old for a petitioner.
Chen Yulian is still in hospital with concussion and bruising after she was beaten up by six "chunky bald men dressed like boxers," Southern Metropolis Daily reported today. Chen said she was visiting a neighbor in a Wuhan City complex when the men pushed her to the ground and kicked her unconscious.
The 16-minute attack was recorded by a surveillance camera on June 23, the report said. Chen woke up in the provincial petition center and finally figured out why she was beaten up. She was mistaken for a petitioner because she was near the provincial officials' residential compound.
Chen was lucky to have an official husband. She phoned him for help without her guardian noticing. Her husband first thought she was kidding, the report said. Several officials with Wuhan police came to Chen's hospital and apologized for the "misunderstanding."
"Their apology was disgusting. I thought I came across some mafia goons and that's how we treat normal petitioners?" Chen was quoted as saying.
