Police inaction blamed for woman's death
POLICE in Beijing are under fire for ignoring a 26-year-old woman who reported eight times for suffering torture from her husband but was never heeded until she was beaten to death.
The victim's mother accused the police of refusing to help her daughter Dong Shanshan even after she showed them bruises and injuries inflicted by her husband Wang Guangyu, who was sentenced to six years in jail in September, Beijing Times reported today.
Dong married Wang, a manager of a trade company, in 2008. A few months later Dong came to live with her mother, saying she was frequently beaten by Wang. She even cried for help in her sleep, said her mother, who didn't give her name.
Domestic violence got worse after Dong asked for a divorce, which Wang rejected and promised to treat her better. Days later her mother received a phone call from Dong, saying Wang was still a good husband and never beat her.
Dong had visited the police station in Chaoyang District eight times for help, said her mother. Each time she was turned back because the police said their home was not in their jurisdiction.
On August 14, 2009, Wang was detained after severely beating his wife who died in hospital two months later of organ failures.
Legal expert Li Meijin told reporters that police should not be blamed because without enough evidence, they can not detain anyone. Dong should have shown them a forensic report to prove her injury.
However, Dong's mother said it was impossible as Wang threatened her daughter not to tell anyone about their family violence.
