Police investigate Beijing airport bomber grievance
A GRIEVANCE that a paralyzed man said he was highlighting by setting off a bomb at Beijing Capital International Airport is to be investigated by police.
Wheelchair-bound Ji Zhongxing set off a homemade device outside the airport’s Terminal 3 arrivals on July 20, severely injuring himself.
A police officer at the scene suffered minor injuries.
Last Tuesday, 33-year-old Ji was jailed for six years at Chaoyang District People’s Court, in Beijing.
The court heard that Ji had handed out leaflets that read “settling old scores” at arrivals, then held the device high for passersby to see, before igniting it when a police officer tried to stop him.
In a blog, Ji says he was working as a motorcycle cabbie in southern Guangdong Province in 2005 when he was knocked off his bike, beaten unconscious and left paralyzed.
Ji wrote that he suffered spinal fractures and had lost the use of his legs.
He said his claims for compensation and demands for his attackers to be punished were rejected, and that he wanted to draw attention to his plight through the bomb.
Zhang Zhiqiang, spokesman for Dongguan police in Guangdong Province confirmed that the attack has been placed on file for investigation, The Beijing News reported.
Ji insisted that he accidentally triggered the explosives due to nerves and has appealed against his sentence.
