Police investigate insertion of 6 needles into baby girl

POLICE in Huai’an, city of Jiangsu Province, are investigating a report that a total of six sewing needles were removed from the body of an 11-month-old girl in the past three months, the Yangtze Evening News reported today.

Pediatrician Chen Weibing from Huai’an Maternity and Child Care Hospital said that it was not known who had introduced the needles into the girl’s body.

Tests showed that the needles did not have eyes on top, hospital officials said, which could indicate someone deliberately removing needle eyes so they would enter her body more easily.

The report said the girl’s parents refused to disclose any details or report the case to police, who were called by the hospital. The newspaper reported that a source close to police said that there are disputes among the girl’s family members. Police did not say if there were any suspects.

The parents sent their daughter to the hospital on Monday at the suggestion of another hospital where the girl was found to have needles in her body. Two needles had removed in May and on July 22, but doctors at the time did not call police.

This week, four needles were found around her waist and hips, having been there for at least one month. After four hours of surgery yesterday, the needles, about 1.5 to 2 centimeters long, were taken out.

“It is a difficult surgery,” Chen said, because the girl was so active and the needles moved, posing a danger to her sciatic nerve and liver. The girl had some slight infection around the needle wounds, but she will recover and be released in 10 days, Chen said.
