Police look into weird loss of 9 million yuan in savings deposit

AN Industrial and Commercial Bank of China customer in Jiangsu Province said her 9 million yuan (US$1.41 million) savings deposit in an ICBC branch in Yangzhong City was removed by a bank employee about two years ago and she still hasn't recovered her money.

"More than two years has passed. The bank still hasn't returned the money and the court hasn't made a verdict," Zheng Xiaoping, the woman's agent, told the People's Daily.

The woman, Zhang Juhua, said she deposited the money in the ICBC Yangzhong Branch in June 2008, but at the end of the year she found the 9 million yuan had disappeared.

Investigation showed that Zhang's deposit was transferred out by the bank's former sales director, He Weihua, using Zhang's USB key.

In September 2009, Zhang sued the bank to the Zhenjiang Province People's Court, demanding the return of her money plus interest.

The court learned that Zhang deposited the money under He's guidance. However, another bank employee, Hong Bozhang, who handled the transaction, didn't give the USB Key to Zhang after the procedure was completed. Instead, he gave it to He's friend Wang Cheng who then gave it to He.

He Weihua verified the sequence of things that happened on that day in writing to Zhang's agent.

But the ICBC Yangzhong Branch refused to compensate, claiming it had fired He on May 7, 2008 before Zhang made the savings deposit, so the bank was not responsible for Zhang's loss.

Zhang told the paper that He Weihua is now an insurance company manager in Yangzhong City.

On the other hand, the court believed it was a criminal case and should be handled by police.

The newspaper report said Yangzhong police have started to probe the case.
