Police lose jobs over torture death in custody
TWO police chiefs in central China lost their jobs and four officers were investigated for torturing a detainee to death and covering it up by saying he died after drinking a cup of hot water.
Zhang Guanjun, the head of Lushan County Public Security Bureau in Henan Province, resigned and took responsibility for the death of Wang Yahui, a theft suspect who was tortured before he died, Xinhua news agency reported today.
The bureau's deputy head was sacked. Henan Provincial Public Security Bureau said four police officers in charge of Wang's interrogation used violence to get a confession. Local prosecutors have stepped into the case.
Twenty-eight-year old Wang died three days after being taken into custody. His relatives found his nipples were ripped off, his penis was injured, and his skull fractured on February 22.
But Lushan police told the family that Wang was perfectly healthy during the interrogation but collapsed only after drinking a cup of hot water spiked with some liquid cold medicine.
Wang's case is the first suspicious death in China's detention houses this year.
