Police microblog lures young criminal to surrender
A 26-year-old fugitive who wounded another man in a dispute by smashing a beer bottle on his head has turned himself in after visiting the official site of a Guangdong Province police bureau on Twitter-like weibo.com.
Qin was granted a bail, ending three months of haunted life as he was on the run, the People's Daily reported today.
Qin confessed to his crime in a tweet to the police microblog site and asked for a bail. Guangdong police said it was the first "microblog confession" they have ever received.
"Is it possible for me to get a bail before the court trial?" Qin tweeted to Zhongshan City police on September 16. One officer, Yang Junhao, said yes, and Qin felt relieved.
On June 2, Qin quarreled with the victim surnamed Huang during a meal and struck his head with a beer bottle. Qin tried to settle the case with Huang outside the court but got rejected. Afterwards, he disappeared.
Criminals who face a maximum of five years in prison may get a bail, Yang said.
Microblogging has become a popular tool with Chinese police units to track down criminals and alert the public. The first police microblog site was opened by officers in Zhaoqing City, Guangdong Province, in February 2010.
