Police nab 8 for tearing down homes by force
EIGHT people have been detained for carrying out forced demolition last night in Harbin, capital of northeastern Heilongjiang Province.
Three of them are demolition company employees and five are casual workers. A dozen more are still on the run, Harbin police said.
Six families were sleeping in their single-story houses around 10:30pm when a group of armed workers came and forced them to leave. An excavator then pulled down the houses, Xinhua News Agency reported.
One worker said they dismantled only parts of the houses to "threaten them to leave," Xinhua said.
Some people said it is the real estate company that directed the forced demolition because the families refused to move in protest over low compensation. But the developer denied the accusation, saying the families "staged the show."
Police are probing into the case, Xinhua said.
